Summary

This update improves support for troubleshooting memory grant-related query execution issues by adding a new Showplan XML warning in SQL Server 2014 Service Pack 2 (SP2) or 2016.When SQL Server detects a scenario in which memory grant usage is inefficient, the MemoryGrantWarning element is added to actual Showplan XML. This element contains information about initial request, granted memory, and maximum used grant. The most common scenario for this warning is when a query is using only a fraction of allocated memory grant. The other scenarios are rare, and relevant behavior of SQL Server may change in future versions.

Resolution

This update is included in the following service pack for SQL Server:

SQL Server 2014 Service Pack 2 SQL Server 2016 Service Pack 1

Service packs are cumulative. Each new service pack contains all the fixes that are in previous service packs, together with any new fixes. Our recommendation is to apply the latest service pack and the latest cumulative update for that service pack. You don't have to install a previous service pack before you install the latest service pack. Use Table 1 in the following article for finding more information about the latest service pack and latest cumulative update.
