OneDrive shows "This file can't be synced"

If you see the error message "This file can't be synced" you may need to do one or more of these steps to get the file syncing again, depending on the error:

  1. Close the file ("This file is in use by another application")

  2. Ensure the file has Read/Write permission ("This file can't be synced because OneDrive doesn't have permission to access the file")

  3. Move the file out of OneDrive and back in again.

If an app is using a file that you have stored on OneDrive, it cannot be synced while the file is open. This includes pictures that you are editing, documents you are writing, or Outlook data files.

You do not need to take any action while you are working on your files. Once you have saved your work, and closed its app, OneDrive will sync the file.

  1. In File Explorer, right-click the file which has the sync issue and select Properties.

  2. Select the Security tab.

  3. Select your name from the Groups or user names list and ensure that "Read" and "Write" are both checked in the Allow column.

  4. If they are not, select Edit to add Read and Write permission.

  1. On the taskbar, right-click the OneDrive cloud icon which has the sync issue.

  2. Select Close OneDrive.

  3. In File Explorer, move the file which has the sync issue to a location outside your OneDrive folder, for example C:\ in This PC.

  4. Restart OneDrive by pressing start Start and typing OneDrive. Then select Open

  5. Wait until OneDrive shows Up to date, then copy your file from its non-OneDrive location back into OneDrive.
