In PowerPoint, you can add text to fade in and out while your video plays. By adding animation effects to your text, you can control how and when your text appears. In the example below, we make text fade in and out.

Add a text box with overlay text

  1. Open the slide on which you've inserted the video.

  2. On the Insert tab, in the Text group, click Text Box.

  3. Point to the area on the video where you want the text to appear, and then drag to draw the text box over it.

  4. Enter the text in the text box.

Apply entrance and exit effects to your text

  1. View your video and seek to the time(s) in which you want your text to fade in and out.

  2. On the Playback tab, use Add Bookmark to insert a bookmark at each position where you want to have text fade in or out.

  3. On the Animations tab, in the Advanced Animation group, click Animation Pane.

  4. To add an entrance fade effect to your text, select the text box to which you want to add the entrance animation.

  5. On the Animations tab, in the Advanced Animation group, click Add Animation.

  6. Under Entrance, select Fade.

  7. To activate the trigger command, reselect the text in the text box.

  8. On the Animations tab, in the Advanced Animation group, in the Trigger list, select On Bookmark, and then click the bookmark that corresponds to the time you want the text box to fade in.

  9. To add an exit fade effect to your text, select the text box to which you want to add the Exit animation.

  10. On the Animations tab, in the Advanced Animation group, select Add Animation.

  11. Under Exit, select Fade.

  12. To activate the trigger command, reselect the text in the text box.

  13. On the Animations tab, in the Advanced Animation group, in the Trigger list, select On Bookmark, and then select the bookmark that corresponds to the time you want the text box to fade out.

To see a preview of how the animations will appear, switch to the Slide Show tab, then select From Current Slide to play that slide.
